Live To Remain is part of the Durham Interfaith Group (University of Durham) and we work in collaboration with Durham City of Sanctuary.

This project was born in the aftermath of several frightful events in 2016. Voices of exclusion, of reject, voices which refuse tolerance, scare us all. Our aim is not something new. In the north of England, fantastic organisations, exhibitions (such as the one exploring the notion of migration, MIMA, Middlesbrough, June-Sept. 2016), festivals (e.g. Liverpool Arab Art Festival, 2016), have tackled the question of cultural sharing and integration.

The scope of Live to Remain is large and inclusive: migrations, amongst which immigration, are a chance to share and discover cultural richnesses.

Our first event, which will be held at the Empty Shop on Tuesday 6 December, is a musical event where we look forward to welcoming Sam Slatcher's songs about the integration of refugees, as well as Alsoreyen Orchestra - a renowned orchestra of classical Arabic music born in Damascus. This will also be an opportunity to introduce the overall project and to share our vision with you.

Future events include a succession of art sessions, open to everyone, to share and explore collectively our sense of belonging. We hope to organise an exhibition early summer 2017 to present this work. There will also be a food evening early February organised with the Durham University association Durham for Refugees, where we cook and eat together. We also look forward to an arabic poetry event.

More details to come, please follow our updates!
